Hiring a Search Engine Optimization Expert
SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” Making the decision to hire an SEO is a big commitment that has the potential to greatly improve your site and save time. It can also sink your site and damage your reputation. It is Infront’s opinion that companies and individuals seeking Search Engine Optimization services should research the potential advantages and risks of hiring a Search Engine Optimizer. Having this kind of background knowledge about internet marketing will ensure that a reputable specialist is hired.
Search Engine Results Pages
Most search engine results pages (SERPs) include “organic” search results, which are free, and paid ads (“Sponsored Links”). Paying for advertisements does not affect your site’s position in the organic search results. No reputable search engine ever accepts money to improve a site’s ranking on the SERPs. Free resources through webmaster forums and search engine help forums and FAQs can provide you with mounds of information about how to optimize your site for organic search, but executing an SEO campaign takes a lot of work and very specialized technical know-how. Infront’s Search Engine Optimizers have broad-ranging marketing and internet experience. These dual skill sets in marketing and SEO are important tools and the secret to our success. Top 3 Warning Signs
1. Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you an email out of the blue.
Amazingly, Google gets these spam emails too:
“Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited emails about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.
2. Stay away from anyone that guarantees a #1 ranking on Google.
Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google.
3. Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.
While a lot of what goes into SEO is not an exact science, we recommend asking for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server or log in to your CMS, they should be willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.
